More than 80 civilians were killed in an air raid which blasted a makeshift camp of displaced people in northern Yemen, witnesses said on Thursday, as the army pursued its offensive on Shiite rebels.
One witness, reached by telephone, told AFP that most of those killed in Wednesday's raid were women and children.
The attack was carried out by a "warplane (that) targeted displaced families who had gathered under trees in the area of Adi," in Amran province -- scene of heavy fighting between the army and the rebels, the witness said, asking not to be identified.
Another witness, also reached by telephone, told AFP that "at least 87 were killed" in the attack, which was acknowledged by a Yemeni official.
"The jet fighter targeted Huthi (rebels) who were firing (while hiding) among the displaced people," the official told AFP requesting anonymity. He declined to comment on the death toll.
A rebel statement condemned the attack, accusing the Sanaa government, which has vowed to crush the five-year-old rebellion, of thirsting for blood.
"The bloodthirsty authorities have committed a new massacre," said a statement issued by the Huthi rebels.
It said that government MiG warplanes at 12:00 noon (0900 GMT) on Wednesday had targeted displaced people gathering along the Barata road, near Harf Sufyan, which lies on the route linking Saada to the capital.
"Dozens were killed and the bodies were blown away by the impact of the strike," the statement said.
The Yemeni army, which launched operation Scorched Earth against the rebels on August 11, said Thursday it has delivered heavy blows "over the past hours."
A military commander claimed the army had killed and wounded many rebels, whom it accused of using civilians as human shields.
New York-based Human Rights Watch urged the Yemeni government to "promptly and impartially investigate responsibility for any attacks on civilians."
In a statement it also urged all parties to the armed conflict in the region to "respect the prohibition under international law against targeting civilians."

Nifty drifts lower after hitting 5K...
The benchmark index moved lower after hitting 5000 levels in the noon trade. Nifty hit the important level of 5,000 for the first time since May 23, 2008, taking 326 trading sessions to regain the important level.
The index is up almost 90 per cent from its March lows. The Nifty was almost unchanged at 4,964, up 5 points, after hitting 5003 at the day’s high. A 4.5 per cent fall in RIL was dragging down the index after Petroleum Trust sold 1.5 crore shares at Rs 2,125 per share.
The Sensex advanced 20 points at 16,697, off its day’s high of 16,820.
The wholesale price index turned positive after 13 weeks of consecutive decline, with inflation for the week ended September 5 rising 0.12 per cent from a year earlier. It declined 0.12 per cent in the earlier week. The rise in inflation also dented investor sentiment.
Samir Arora, fund manager at Helios Capital Mgmt, said that he expects a correction likely to take place in markets at current levels. But it is unlikely to be a sharp one, he added.
Among the frontline stocks, Bharti and ACC were up over 3 per cent. IT stocks TCS and Wipro were up over 2 per cent.
Asian markets were mostly up after US stocks ended higher following an upbeat report on industrial production raised hopes that the world’s largest economy is strengthening.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 108 points to another high for the year. It was the market's eighth gain in nine days.
The promising report from the Federal Reserve on industrial production came a day after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the recession was likely over. The central bank's report that industrial activity surged 0.8 per cent in August topped expectations. The Fed also said the improvement in production for July was twice what it had initially reported.
Hong Kong and Chinese markets had advanced over 1 per cent while Japan’s benchmark index was up close to 1 per cent.

In Pune, wear a political swine flu mask......
In a country looking for fresh faces and fresh ideas in politics, here is an innovation. It may soon be politically correct in Pune to wear the political swine flu mask while campaigning for the forthcoming Assembly elections.
A Pune-based supplier of political accessories has come up with the political swine flu mask and he's hoping the colourful accessory will be the election idea of the season.
Girish Murudkar, owner, Murudkar Jhendewala says: "Political parties wanted something different this year. So we came up with this idea."
This was the most obvious campaign tool he could offer political parties in a city that's seen the most swine flu cases in the country.
"I do think it is a good idea. I will put on the mask and campaign for my party. If my party workers are seen around the city wearing it, it will be good publicity for us," says Narayan Lonkar and NCP Leader.
If you're wondering how many swine flu masks have sold so far, well with parties yet to name candidates, the orders are yet to come in.
But at Rs 20 a piece, Murudkar hopes it will sell like hot vadapavs.
